A shopping Mecca

We were delighted to publish the report from the Horseshoe Bend Development Group that announced the imminent signing of several major retail tenants for the shopping center the group has planned for that area of Lake Ozark.

The shopping center ' to be called 'The Shoppes at Horseshoe Bend' ' promises to become a shopping Mecca for the lake area and beyond. As we've reported previously, the development company that will actually oversee the center is the CORMAC Company, a well-respected developer with offices in Kansas City and Omaha, Neb.

HBDG is planning a center that will include some 15 major retailers plus 50 smaller retail shops. In addition, there will be a movieplex and food outlets.

This sounds very much to us as though Lake of the Ozarks residents will soon have access to retailers in niches that are now only available to us if we travel to Columbia, Mo., Jefferson City, Mo., or Springfield, Mo.

Often when new stores open in a community, they take business from stores already established there. In this case, we suspect the Shoppes will make the lake area a stronger draw, bringing increased year-round shoppers from places like Rolla, Mo., Lebanon, Mo., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

The Shoppes will open in stages according to the developer. About 40 percent of it is scheduled to open by the summer of 2009 and the rest a year later. The proposal is yet another reminder that the lake is no longer a place that operates strictly during the summer months.

We congratulate HBDG and look forward with great anticipation to The Shoppes at Horseshoe Bend.
